CBD Oil For Anxiety And Stress: Research, Benefits, And Risks

In our culture being called a “workaholic” is often considered a compliment. Many overextend themselves at home and work and have little time to unwind. With this type of lifestyle being considered normal, it’s not a huge surprise that anxiety and everyday stress are among the most common mental health concerns in the United States.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety affects 40 million Americans over the age of 18. Of those 40 million, less than half will find relief for their symptoms.

As hemp products become more accessible across the country, their health benefits continue to be revealed. Such is the case with Cannabidiol (CBD) which has many uses that promote both mental and physical wellness.

Does CBD Oil Reduce Anxiety?

You have probably heard someone mention CBD oil as a potential solution for a range of disorders. Some of these include psychological issues like anxiety and depression. Because of this growing interest – no pun intended – more and more researchers are finding that if you suffer from anxiety, hemp derived CBD oil might help relieve some of your symptoms.

We’ll talk about what those researchers have found out regarding this new product and the ways it’s helped, other people. As a general rule, keep in mind that the FDA has not approved CBD as a treatment or cure for anxiety or other disorders and your personal results may vary.

Various studies have been done in order to get more information about CBD and anxiety relief. Research results continue to show that CBD has promise as a natural and safe choice to help relieve some of the symptoms of anxiety.

Here’s what the science tells us so far:

  • In 2015, a study reviewed the existing literature on the use of CBD as a potential mediator for the symptoms of anxiety disorders. This particular article cited past research supporting the effectiveness of CBD in helping reduce acute symptoms of anxiety, especially in disorders like posttraumatic stress disorder, general anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and seasonal affective disorder.

They reported that CBD has broad actions by which it helps reduce symptoms of various anxiety disorders, including:

  • Reduces anxious feelings
  • Reduces compulsive behavior
  • Decreases arousal of the autonomic nervous system
  • Helps extinguish fear
  • Protects against effects of long-term stress

The researchers asked themselves if more long-term, or “chronic” dosing of CBD would have similar positive benefits – and they didn’t exactly find an answer. They concluded that more research needs to be done in order to answer their inquiry.

The results of the meta-analysis, however, highlighted CBD’s ability to successfully reduce anxiety behaviors related to these disorders in the short term.

  • A 2016 study found the use of CBD oil to be a safe way to reduce anxiety and improve sleep when administered to a young girl suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder due to a history of abuse.

According to researchers, the girl’s grandmother (her caregiver) stated:

“My granddaughter’s behaviors are definitely better being on the CBD. Her anxiety is not gone, but it is not as intense, and she is much easier to be around. She now sleeps in her own room most of the time, which has never happened before.”

  • A 2019 study tracked the progress of patients diagnosed with a sleep or anxiety disorder. These individuals were diagnosed by mental health professionals. Their disorders were monitored in conjunction with the use of CBD.

On average, most patients saw an improvement in their anxiety and sleep-related issues.

Overall, these improvements were sustained over time.

From this research, experts also concluded that CBD appears to be better tolerated than “routine psychiatric medications.” The study maintains that CBD may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders.

As a general consensus, most experts agree that more research needs to be done to answer some of the more pressing questions related to CBD as a clinical treatment.

Overall, the research shows that CBD oil can be helpful in reducing symptoms of anxiety.

How Can CBD Oil Help Anxiety

The cannabis plant contains more than 60 different chemicals compounds known as cannabinoids. These cannabinoids work in conjunction with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is a naturally occurring network in the human body that is responsible for the distribution of various neurotransmitters across the brain and body. The ECS regulates things like memory, mood, appetite, metabolism, pain, sleep, temperature, digestion, inflammation, and more.

So how does CBD interact with the ECS to help reduce anxiety?

A January 2019 research article suggests that CBD has a calming effect in the central nervous system that may account for the reduction of anxiety symptoms. This same study also reported that CBD has value in improving sleep issues – a huge problem for those suffering from anxiety.

Does hemp derived CBD Oil Work as Well as Medical CBD oil?

CBD used in scientific studies is very potent and refined, primarily produced from CBD isolate.

The question then arises, is CBD oil derived from industrial hemp, or what may be called Artisanal CBD, effective in reducing various symptoms?

In a 2018 article researchers found that the readily available artisanal preparations of cannabidiol oil provided a 50% reduction in seizure activity in study participants. Their findings support the efficacy of artisanal CBD with few significant side effects.

More research needs to be done with CBD overall, both the highly purified versions and those CBD products derived from industrial hemp.
